Habibat Sparrow Nest Box
Integrated masonry sparrow nest box for housing developments and commercial schemes.
The Habibat Sparrow Nest Box provides a durable, integrated nesting solution designed to be built directly into masonry during construction. Conforming to BS 42021:2022, it has been developed to help architects, developers and housebuilders incorporate bird nesting habitat while meeting ecological requirements and planning conditions across new build housing and commercial developments.
Integrated sparrow nest boxes support ecological mitigation and enhancement measures within modern construction. While these features are not typically included within the statutory biodiversity metric, they are recognised under BS 8683:2021 as additional biodiversity enhancements that contribute to the overall ecological value of a scheme.
By integrating the A1 fire-rated masonry nest box directly into the building fabric, developers can provide long-term habitat for birds in a way that is practical, cost-effective and consistent with modern building design.

Design & Performance
Technical details, installation guidance and specification information
Design & Performance
The Habibat Sparrow Nest Box is designed in accordance with BS 42021:2022 and manufactured using lightweight thermal masonry blocks, providing a stable and durable nesting environment within the structure of the building.
Constructed using masonry materials with an A1 reaction-to-fire classification, and bonded using A2-s1,d0 classified adhesive, the unit is suitable for modern construction where fire performance is a key consideration.
The box can be produced in brick to match the host building, supplied unfaced for rendered finishes, or manufactured in stone, allowing it to integrate discreetly into both contemporary and traditional architecture.
Designed for Sparrows
The Habibat Sparrow Nest Box is designed to provide suitable nesting conditions for House Sparrows, a species closely associated with buildings and human habitation, nesting within wall cavities, roof spaces and eaves for thousands of years.
House Sparrow populations have declined significantly since the 1970s and the species is now listed on the UK Red List.
The masonry construction helps maintain consistent internal conditions, creating a stable and secure nesting environment.
Developed with input from the RSPB and recognised for suitability by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), the design reflects current best practice for supporting sparrows within the built environment.
Installation
The Habibat Sparrow Nest Box is designed for simple installation by bricklayers during construction. Manufactured to standard UK brick dimensions, it integrates directly into masonry walls as part of the build process.
- Sized for easy integration into standard brickwork
- Installed during construction with no retrofitting required
- Simple for bricklayers to incorporate into the build
- Supports programme certainty across multiple plots
- Designed to last the lifetime of the building
As House Sparrows are a colony-nesting species, it is recommended that multiple nest boxes are installed in close proximity to maximise occupancy and ecological benefit.
Applications
The Habibat Sparrow Nest Box is suitable for a wide range of developments including:
- Housing developments
- Schools and educational buildings
- Commercial developments
- Architect-designed projects
- Mixed-use and regeneration schemes
Its discreet design and flexible finishes allow it to integrate seamlessly into a variety of building types.
Supporting Planning & Biodiversity Requirements
The Habibat Sparrow Nest Box forms part of a wider biodiversity enhancement strategy, helping developments respond to ecological requirements and planning expectations.
Although sparrow nesting features are not typically included within the statutory biodiversity metric, they are recognised under BS 8683:2021 as additional biodiversity enhancement measures contributing to the ecological value of a development.
The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) also requires developments to incorporate meaningful biodiversity improvements in and around buildings, making integrated bird nesting provision a practical and policy-aligned feature of modern construction.
