Habibat Bumble Bee Box

Integrated masonry bumble bee box designed to provide sheltered nesting space within developments.

The Habibat Bumble Bee Box provides a purpose-designed, integrated habitat solution that can be built directly into masonry during construction. Developed to support biodiversity within modern developments, it offers a practical way for architects, developers and housebuilders to incorporate features that benefit pollinators while responding to ecological and planning requirements.

Over 97% of natural bee habitat has been lost in the UK over the past 60 years, contributing to significant declines in pollinator populations. The Habibat Bumble Bee Box provides a weatherproof, dry and dark space, helping to support local bumble bee colonies where appropriate conditions exist.

While bee boxes are not a substitute for wider habitat provision, they can form part of a broader biodiversity strategy, particularly when used alongside soft landscaping and native planting schemes.

Key Features:

Design & Performance

Technical details, installation guidance and specification information

  • Design & Performance

The Habibat Bumble Bee Box is manufactured using lightweight thermal masonry materials, providing a durable and stable environment within the building structure.

The box is constructed using masonry materials with an A1 reaction-to-fire classification, with components bonded using A2-s1,d0 classified adhesive, ensuring suitability for modern construction.

The reduced entrance size is designed to allow access for bumble bees while reducing the risk of predation, helping to create a secure nesting environment. The internal space provides a dark, enclosed cavity that can support colony establishment where suitable surrounding habitat is available.

Units can be supplied in brick, stone or render-ready finishes, allowing seamless integration into a wide range of building types.

  • Species Suitability

The Habibat Bumble Bee Box is designed to support bumble bees, which typically nest in sheltered, enclosed spaces such as cavities in the ground, walls or other protected locations.

The box provides a secure internal space for the colony, ensuring that bees and larvae are contained within the purpose-designed unit. This helps create suitable nesting conditions where surrounding habitat supports foraging and colony development.

It is important that bee boxes are used in conjunction with appropriate planting and habitat provision, as nesting success is closely linked to the availability of nearby food sources.

  • Installation

The Habibat Bumble Bee Box is designed for straightforward installation during construction by bricklayers. Manufactured to standard UK brick dimensions, it integrates directly into masonry as part of the build process.

    • Sized for easy integration into standard brickwork
    • Installed during construction with no retrofitting required
    • Simple for bricklayers to incorporate into the build
    • Supports programme certainty across multiple plots
    • Designed to last the lifetime of the building

For best results, boxes should be located in areas where surrounding landscaping and planting can support pollinator activity.

  • Application

The Habibat Bumble Bee Box is suitable for a wide range of developments including:

    • Housing developments
    • Schools and educational buildings
    • Commercial developments
    • Architect-designed projects
    • Mixed-use and regeneration schemes

It is particularly effective where developments include landscaping schemes designed to support pollinators.

  • Supporting Planning & Biodiversity Requirements

The Habibat Bumble Bee Box can form part of a wider biodiversity enhancement strategy, helping developments respond to ecological requirements and local authority guidance.

While bee boxes are not typically included within statutory biodiversity metrics, they are often encouraged as additional enhancement measures that contribute to the overall ecological value of a site.

They are most effective when used as part of a holistic approach to biodiversity, alongside habitat creation, soft landscaping and native planting, rather than as a standalone solution.

  • Project Support

Habibat works with architects, developers, ecologists and contractors to ensure the right nesting features are selected and delivered effectively.

    We can assist with:

    • Advice on product selection
    • Reviewing drawings and layouts
    • Guidance on positioning and specification
    • Support with planning and ecological requirements
    • Practical advice on installation and buildability

Our aim is to make ecological enhancement straightforward and practical to deliver on site.
